A day dyeing

I had a great day dyeing yarn yesterday. I didn't actually get any skeins dyed but instead I decided to do things the right way and followed step-by-step instructions on how to dye with primary colors instead of buying specialty colors which can be very expensive and apparently the dyes don't always show up in the same color as the sample.

Normally when I dye, I just dive in with no recipe but I really want to learn how to do this right to make my business successful in creating beautiful hand-dyed yarns that I can recreate if necessary. Here are four photos I took of my lesson. The book instructs the dyer to make 12 small skeins and twist them as you would a dyed skein, which is what I did. I followed the "color recipe" and while my skeins are a little off I am really happy all the beautiful colors I made using only red, yellow and blue dyes. I think I twisted the skeins a little too tight and the dyes weren't able to penetrate between the twists so I ended up with a lot of white. Normally when you dye you don't twist your skeins anyway, you tie them off with 3 figure-8 ties and dye.

The first photo is my "color wheel".The second photo is from the book I followed. The last two photos show the dried skeins which I opened to dry and re-twisted so you can see the white I was talking about. I am still really happy with the results and I love the colors I produced. I am hoping that tomorrow I will have time to dye and have skeins up and ready to sell on my site soon!
